We have three children, and they are as different and unique from each other as a slug is from a giraffe.
Ben is our teenager. Tall. I mean, really tall. 14 years old, size 16 men’s shoe, and 6 feet 4 inches. He loves anything military, can memorize things easily, struggles a little with laziness, and smart… super, super smart. Very messy. He has a good ear for music. Compassion is his weakness, yet creativity is his strength. Rarely do we go a few hours without hearing him say, “I have an idea!” He isn’t afraid to get up in front of people and pray or lead singing or teach. He is highly social and loves to be with people. He talks nonstop.
Another confession to make…
Cheddar cheese is a weakness. Cheddar cheese is not always found in this country, and when it is it is EXPENSIVE. How expensive? $11 for about 16 ounces. In the States, you couldn’t get me to buy cheddar cheese that was more than $2.50 for 16 ounces at most. Remember? I was the major coupon lady. If it wasn’t on sale and I didn’t have a coupon, I didn’t get it! I stocked up when the price was right, and we never lacked for cheese.
But here? Cheddar is a taste of the familiar. It is like a little yellow block of hugs and kisses from America for my taste buds. Chunked, sliced, shredded, melted… oh, so yummy cheddar! So, do I buy the $11 cheese when it is on the shelf? YOU BET I DO! I may not use it often like I did in the States, but I grab it when it is there. (Often I mix it with a little of the cheap, bland cheese to ease my coupon-loving mind.) There is no guarantee it will be there tomorrow. It is worth $11 to me and to my family!
We didn’t get to choose our house here. It was chosen for us. We had friends here who we had to trust to pick out our home for us. They asked us what we needed in a home, what our budget needs were in a home, and things we would hope for in a home. But ultimately, they had to make the decision and make the arrangements.
When they chose the home and signed the contract, they called us and then send pictures. It was difficult from the pictures to tell exactly what we were getting in to. The pictures were very promising and encouraging! We were pleased when we arrived to find that the house was perfect to meet our needs… and then over and beyond. It was our hearts’ desires in a home here. God had blessed abundantly.
Many years ago, there was a famous tightrope walker. He performed many amazing feats… death defying feats.
One of his greatest stunts was a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. Now, I have been to Niagara Falls. Let me just say, watching someone cross that… I think I would toss my cookies, if you know what I mean.
