  • Scripture References
All Scripture references are taken from the King James version of the Bible.

Before Jason and I got married, we had a bridal shower. I was more shy and quiet back then... And also very ignorant of many things. At the shower, the room was filled with ladies and gifts. Each gift bag was handed to me one by one. I wasn't really sure how to react to each gift, so I smiled a lot and said thank you many times. I was so nervous and hated being the center of attention. But these ladies had invested time and money into each of these gifts. Their goal was to be a blessing to me and to Jason. It was their way of helping our marriage succeed.

I remember opening one gift and pulling out a gadget I had never seen before. It had handles like a can opener, a tiny basket area in the front, and an arm that lowered into the basket to squish something. I was clueless! But I pasted on the smile and said thank you again. The purchaser of the gift read me like a book! "You have no idea what that is, do you?" I had to be honest... Nope, I sure didn't! She told me what the gadget was, but I was still clueless why I would ever need a garlic press.  The garlic press went into a drawer in our new home and was never used.

Now, as I have matured in my cooking skills beyond Hamburger Helper and frozen pizzas, I laugh. I now appreciate that gift! I have experienced the flavor of freshly pressed garlic in meals made from scratch. Boxed and canned foods just do not compare to the flavor of sautéed onions and fresh garlic. (Can I get a witness?!)

To think, all those years... A garlic press was at my disposal. I just had to learn how to use it. Well, first I had to figure out what it was... Then learn how to use it. What a blessing it could have been to so many who feasted at my table! What a blessing it could have been to my family!

Ephesians 4:7-10 "But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)"

Now think about the gifts that God has given us... The gifts that Christ sacrificed so much to give us... And we have put those gifts in our spiritual drawer (the pew) and never done anything with them. Get off the pew! Find out what your gift(s) is(are) and do something with it! He didn't invest so much in those gifts for them to sit on a pew. Get your garlic press out of the drawer, learn how to use it, and be a blessing to those who are hungry!
