So many people struggle with this one thing...

How do I know God's will for my life?  Does He want me to buy this house, marry this man, go to this college, be a missionary, be a nurse, homeschool the children?

Ephesians 4:1 "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,"

How can a person walk worthy of their calling if they don't know what that calling is?

Actually, you can know very easily what your calling is, ladies. Let's talk about God's general (known) will versus God's specific (unknown) will.

General (known) will:

God lays out very beautifully in His Word what His general will is. He doesn't want us to lie, cheat, steal, slander, back bite, gossip, have sex outside of marriage, etc. He wants us to be faithful to church, read our Bibles regularly, study His Word, share the Gospel, etc. These are His will for us.

But often our problem is that we want to know His specific will without having to submit to His general will. "Does God want me and my boyfriend to buy this house?" Um... That's an easy one! According to His general will, He doesn't want you living with your boyfriend, so the house is irrelevant! "Does God want me to be a missionary in a foreign land?" Well, I don't know, but let me ask you... Are you faithfully witnessing where you are now? Are you reaching out to your neighbors now?

Proverbs 3:6 "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

See, the thing is... Why should God reveal His specific will if we are not obeying what He has already clearly commanded in Scripture? Why should God tell us if we should move to a new State for a new job if we are not being a good employee at our current job? Why should He tell a teenager which college to attend if that teen is rebellious against his or her current authority... The parents!

There is a simple trick to knowing God's will for our lives... Obey God's will for our day to day! We focus too much on God's specific will. If we would learn how to submit to God's general known will found in Scripture... If we would learn to pour our energies into doing what is clearly taught to be right... He will make very clear what His specific will is. If we acknowledge and obey Him... He will guide us and direct our paths!

Want to know God's will? Learn to obey His Word!
